History

The Department of Biomedical Engineering started its activities in 2018 within the Faculty of Electrical and Electronics, one of the oldest faculties of our University, and graduated its first cohort in 2022. The department continues to renew its academic staff, program infrastructure, and curriculum in line with the evolving science and technology, without compromising its quality. Our primary goal is to train biomedical engineers who can work and conduct research at an international level in the biomedical engineering sector. In this context, we are aware that vocational training in Biomedical Engineering should be approached from an international perspective, and relevant studies continue in the department and faculty academic boards. Moreover, to further elevate the quality of our department, meetings are held with sector representatives, alumni, and certain official institutions and organizations.

The Department started its educational activities with the 2018 Bologna Education Plan upon its establishment. With the quality efforts of our University’s Rectorship and the department’s continuous improvement activities, we have transitioned to the 2024 Bologna Education Plan, which will be in effect from the fall semester of 2024 at Yıldız Technical University.

The Bologna Process is a restructuring process aimed at creating a European Higher Education Area. It is a process developed and maintained by 48 member countries in collaboration with various international organizations. Citizens of countries within the European Higher Education Area, created through this process, will be able to move easily for higher education or work within this area. With this process, Europe, including Turkey, aims to become more attractive in terms of higher education and employment opportunities compared to other regions of the world. The Bologna Process seeks to establish a balance between diversity and unity. The goal is to make higher education systems comparable and compatible with each other while preserving their unique differences. This will facilitate easier transitions from one country or higher education system to another, increasing the mobility and employment opportunities for students and faculty members. In line with these objectives, Yıldız Technical University has reorganized all its programs and courses according to the European Higher Education Qualifications Framework and the Turkish Higher Education Qualifications Framework. As a sign of this, the ECTS Label and Diploma Supplement Label were awarded to our University by the relevant European Commission bodies in June 2013. Since then, the Bologna Process has been successfully implemented at our University with a continuous improvement approach, evolving and updating itself.

Our department closely follows the developments in the biomedical engineering sector both in Turkey and worldwide. A significant number of our graduates immediately start working in the sector, while others apply for postgraduate education either at various national universities or internationally.
